Time: 7:45 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004.
Place: The public parking lot next to the St. Francis Yacht Club, located on the Bay at the north end of the Marina Green, next to where they play volleyball on weekends. This is where the Presidio begins. Two nearby street signs, for Mapquest purposes, are where Lundeen and Mason streets cross.
Route: This time I'd like to head south along the Marina Green, walk past Gas House Cove (across from the Marina Safeway) and enter the park at Fort Mason. I'd like to walk slowly up the path and over the hill that overlooks the Fort Mason piers. There's a display there explaining the role of the piers. I refer to it in the first post of this blog. Then I'd like to continue down to Aquatic Park until we come to the Dolphin Club at the foot of Hyde, at Jefferson. We'll go in and look at the hand-made wooden boats, some quite beautiful and one over a century old, lovingly restored.
Then we can admire the vessels on the Hyde Street Pier, if we wish, otherwise, or when done, we'll retrace back through the Fort Mason Park, this time varying the route a bit so we pass through the community garden, which is quite beautiful this time of the year. After that it's all down-hill or flat.
Distance is an estimated, make that guessed, 1.5 - 2.0 miles each way. 3-4 miles all told. Better than last week, over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin, where it was a good five miles and three-hours. Too much, too soon, for the likes of me, given the uphill climb. Fort Mason is a bit of a climb, but stretched out a little better than the bridge, I hope. We're trying to stoke up the day, not wear ourselves out for the weekend. Not that that ever happened, of course. An hour or two is nice. Everest we'll do later...much later.
We've had nice weather. Think about whether the weather warrants hats or gloves. Okay to bring your significant others and kids, if you'd care to; they're welcome. We enjoy the day. We enjoy getting to know one another. If something comes up relative to the grand adventure of this class, we talk about that too, but casually. It's not a roving seminar. Walk'n'talk, as long as we're not out of breath, that's what it is.
We can't help it if Con-law happens to be all around us and we note it from time to time. That's part of the game.
The more the merrier. I hope you can make it. If not this time, then another. You're helping me keep at it. Otherwise I might get lazy.
